What is Bitcoin?

Bitcoin is a peer-to-peer payment system and digital currency. It is called a cryptocurrency because it uses cryptography to control the creation and transfer of money. Bitcoins are not tied to any country or subject to any government regulation. The Bitcoins themselves are stored in a "digital wallet" which acts as a virtual bank account.
